Family/Home

A good, all round laptop that will mainly stay at home. Prioritses overall performance ahead of portability and battery life. Likely to be a larger screen size. Good for email, web-browsing, watching videos and general office work.

Choose this for a great value all-round laptop that will usually stay at home.

Light Use

A laptop that will be used only occasionally, perhaps for email and web-browsing.

Choose this if you just want a computer to handle the basics.

All Round

A laptop that is good in all departments, including portability. They are similar to family computers but are more suitable for individual use both inside and outside the home. This means all-round laptops are additionally more portable (lighter, smaller screen and often longer battery life), which may increase the cost over family/home laptops where portability isn’t a factor.

Choose this for a great value all-round laptop that will be used on the go as much as at home.

Office

A laptop that prioritises performance in office apps such as MS Word or Excel. They will usually have a higher RAM to aid multitasking. Note that these MS Office apps will not usually come pre-installed on recommended computers and should be bought separately.

Choose this if you'll use your laptop mainly for office work.

Portable

A laptop with a specific focus on being as lightweight and portable as possible. This usually comes with either an increased cost or a lower performance compared to less portable devices.

Choose this if it is really important to you that your computer be as lightweight and portable as possible.

Schoolwork

A laptop that gives solid performance when it comes to the needs of classroom or home learning. Remember that MS Office is not usually included as standard.

Choose this if you are a parent or teacher buying specifically for children to use.

High Performance

A laptop that will run quickly and reliably in almost all circumstances. These will have high specifications in CPU, RAM and storage speed and capacity, making them the highest performing laptops in terms of productivity. They will typically cost more than standard laptops.

Choose this if you want a powerful laptop for productivity.

Light Gaming

A laptop that is suitable for light gaming. They will be able to play casual games easily and may be able to handle modern games at lower settings. Typically, they will include either and APU or a low-end GPU.

Choose this for a gaming laptop that won't break the bank.

Performance Gaming

A laptop that is suitable for mid- to high-end gaming. They will include a mid- to high-end GPU, which adds to the cost and detracts from portability. However, they will be powerful in terms of rendering 3D graphics.

Choose this for a high-powered gaming laptop.
