You asked for a Laptop costing under £200.

Although you asked for a laptop under £200, it was difficult to find one that I could recommend to you for your needs at that price. As a result, I have found the following laptops that meet your needs and are all under £350. One meets your sub £200 request, one is just above at £250 and one is just above that at £300. I am showing you these laptops so you can have the maximum choice – I couldn’t find any better performance than choice 2 for under £200, so there was little point suggesting others. Instead, you can see what an extra £50 or £100 would get and then you can make a more informed choice. I hope that’s OK.

You told me that you needed a schoolwork laptop for schoolwork purposes. You also added the following additional information: For 5 and 8 year old to do home learning

I searched a range of different shops for something that would suit your needs. I have chosen the three options below as the best ones to suit your requirements. However, we all have our own tastes (and of course, prices can change), so I have also included search links for each shop at the bottom of this page in case you’d like to browse further.

I always choose three options. These are usually (1) the best performing option within your budget (i.e. best suited to meet your needs for the longest possible time), (2) the cheapest option that still meets your needs effectively and (3) usually a wildcard option or a compromise between the two. If you are able to, I would usually recommend the first option as it is likely to be powerful enough to meet your needs for the longest before it needs replacing. However, I specify three choices so that you can pick the one that best suits your circumstances.

I do not work for or on behalf of any of the retailers listed below.

Prices correct as of 4th Apr 2022

1. Best overall performance: ASUS Vivobook 15 X515JA 15.6″ Full HD Laptop (Intel Penti…
£249.99

Key features:
CPU: Pentium 6805
RAM: 4GB
Storage: 128GB
Graphics: Integrated
This choice represents the best overall performance I could get from your budget. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. It has the strongest CPU I could find under £300 and 4GB RAM. It has an SSD too and you will notice the speed increase over choice 2. It also includes Windows and Microsoft Office, although the Office (Word, Powerpoint etc) is only valid for a year. If you possibly can afford the extra £50 on your budget, I would strongly recommend this over choice 2.

2. Cheapest option: Cube Explorer W955JU
£189.99

Key features:
CPU: Intel Pentium 4405U Dual Core Processor
RAM: 4GB
Storage: 500GB
Graphics: Integrated Intel HD 510 Graphics
This choice represents the cheapest device I could find that still meets your needs. I chose it primarily based on its CPU and flexibility. You are making a lot of compromises at this price – it doesn’t even include Windows, which you would have to get from somewhere else and would be an extra cost. It does have a DVD drive, which is rare in a laptop these days, but if I’m being honest, I strongly recommend you don’t get this and try to stretch to choice 1 if possible. There are other laptops sub-£200, but in my opinion, they will also be far too slow to use and you will end up needing to replace it far sooner.

3. Third option: EXDISPLAY Lenovo V15 Ryzen 3 8GB 256GB SSD 15.6″ No OS La…
£300.30

Key features:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3-3250U 2.6GHz
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Graphics: Integrated AMD Radeon Graphics
This choice represents the third option – a real wildcard. It is basically a £400 laptop for £300 because it is ex-display (i.e. it was on the shop floor as a demonstration model, but 8GB RAM and a Ryzen 3 processor are amazing at this price. If this is out of stock by the time you read this, I would look at other ex-display models either here at Ebuyer or particularly at Amazon warehouse, where you can sometimes pick up a virtually brand new laptop at used prices.

Why did I choose these for you?

It is important that you understand what the components of a laptop do so that you can make an informed choice. Here is my very basic explanation for each:

  • CPU: The brain of your laptop. A better one makes your laptop faster.
  • RAM: Your laptop’s short term memory – more of this means it can cope well with doing more things at once.
  • Storage: How much space your laptop has to store files, photos, apps etc. More storage means you can store more stuff.
  • Graphics: Your laptop has a graphics processor (GPU) responsible for how things appear on the screen. A better GPU will mean your device will cope better with more complicated graphics, such as in 3D games.
