You asked for a Laptop costing under £800.

You told me that you needed a family laptop for web-browsing, online video, office work. You also added the following additional information: Main computer for me and my girlfriend, we want to watch videos and do work on it. Bigger screen is better.

I chose three laptops for you, all with nice big screens of 16 inches or better. The first two are great for videos and working – both have 16GB of RAM which means the laptop is likely to last you a long time. The third is a wildcard in case you fancy something different.

I searched a range of different shops for something that would suit your needs. I have chosen the three options below as the best ones to suit your requirements. However, we all have our own tastes (and of course, prices can change), so I have also included search links for each shop at the bottom of this page in case you’d like to browse further.

I always choose three options. These are usually (1) the best performing option within your budget (i.e. best suited to meet your needs for the longest possible time), (2) the cheapest option that still meets your needs effectively and (3) usually a wildcard option or a compromise between the two. If you are able to, I would usually recommend the first option as it is likely to be powerful enough to meet your needs for the longest before it needs replacing. However, I specify three choices so that you can pick the one that best suits your circumstances.

I do not work for or on behalf of any of the retailers listed below.

Prices correct as of 4th Apr 2022

1. Best overall performance: New Inspiron 16
£789.00

Key features:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 8-core/16-thread Processor with Radeon Graphics
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512GB
Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics
This choice represents the best overall performance I could get from your budget. I chose it primarily based on its CPU, which is excellent, and its 16GB RAM. The screen is 16″, slightly taller than normal, which will be great for work!

2. Cheapest option: HONOR MagicBook Pro 16.1″ Laptop, Full HD IPS, 512GB PCIe…
£597.94

Key features:
CPU: Ryzen 5 4600H
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512GB
Graphics: Radeon Ryzen 5 4600H
This choice represents the cheapest device I could find that still meets your needs. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. Very similar specs to choice 1 but a slightly slower (maybe about 20% slower?) processor. It’s up to you whether the extra speed is worth the extra money. This is sold by Amazon imported from one of their Amazon EU sites, so the price might go up or down. Check the reviews carefully too as some people have reported keyboard problems. However, for the roughly £190 saving, it might be worth the risk, particualrly as Amazon usually has a pretty good returns policy.

3. Third option: EXDISPLAY Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Core i5 8GB 256GB SSD GTX 1…
£799.72

Key features:
CPU: Intel Core i5 9300HF 2.4GHz
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
This choice represents the third option – cheaper than choice 1 but more powerful than choice 2. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. This has some lower specs – only 8GB RAM, meaning it will not be as good at multitasking, and half the storage at just 256GB. However, it has the largest screen of the three (17.3″) and also includes a graphics processor (GPU), meaning it will deal with games much better than either of the above two laptops, if that is a consideration for you. Laptops with a separate GPU are usually much more expensive, but this ex display model fits into your budget and is a bit of a wildcard!

Why did I choose these for you?

It is important that you understand what the components of a laptop do so that you can make an informed choice. Here is my very basic explanation for each:

  • CPU: The brain of your laptop. A better one makes your laptop faster.
  • RAM: Your laptop’s short term memory – more of this means it can cope well with doing more things at once.
  • Storage: How much space your laptop has to store files, photos, apps etc. More storage means you can store more stuff.
  • Graphics: Your laptop has a graphics processor (GPU) responsible for how things appear on the screen. A better GPU will mean your device will cope better with more complicated graphics, such as in 3D games.
