You asked for a touch-enabled Laptop costing under £500.

You told me that you needed a portable laptop for its light weight and good battery life. You also added the following additional information: Would like it to be light and easy to get out/ tkae on holiday. Also would like a touch screen if possible.

For under £500, these are the best portable touchscreen laptops/2-in-1s that I can find for you. If you possibly can, I would strongly recommend the third choice, but it is over your budget. Please note that choice 2 is a Chromebook, not a Windows laptop.

I searched a range of different shops for something that would suit your needs. I have chosen the three options below as the best ones to suit your requirements. However, we all have our own tastes (and of course, prices can change), so I have also included search links for each shop at the bottom of this page in case you’d like to browse further.

I always choose three options. These are usually (1) the best performing option within your budget (i.e. best suited to meet your needs for the longest possible time), (2) the cheapest option that still meets your needs effectively and (3) usually a wildcard option or a compromise between the two. I specify three choices so that you can pick the one that best suits your circumstances.

I do not work for or on behalf of any of the retailers listed below.

1. Best overall performance: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 3rd Gen (13 inch Multi-Touch) Tablet P…
£499.99

Key features:
CPU: Core i5 (8250U)
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Graphics: Intel UHD 620
This choice represents the best overall performance I could get from your budget. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. It features an older i5 processor, which is still stronger than the more modern i3-1110G4 you might find as the alternative at this price point. The CPU is on Microsoft’s list as supporting Windows 11 if you want to upgrade in the future, although you should check with the manufacturer if this is important to you.

2. Alternative option: ASUS Touchscreen Full HD 14 inch ChromeBook CX5400FMA Lap…
£499.99

Key features:
CPU: Core i3-1110G4
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Graphics: Integrated
There are no cheaper touchscreen laptops that I could recommend, so choice 2 is something a bit different. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. It is a Chromebook, which means it doesn’t use Microsoft Windows. This might be a better option if you are looking under £500, as Chrome runs better on lower powered hardware than Windows does.

3. Wildcard option: Dell Inspiron 7415 14″ FHD 2-in-1 Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 550…
£599.00

Key features:
CPU: Ryzen 5 5500U
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Graphics: Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics
This choice represents the third option – the Wildcard. Although choices for a portable, touchscreen enabled laptop are a bit limited under £500, if you were able to stretch to £600, this would be a great buy. Much stronger CPU means you will not need to replace this laptop for longer. This is my top recommendation if you can, but it is not choice 1 because it is £100 over budget.

Why did I choose these for you?

It is important that you understand what the components of a laptop do so that you can make an informed choice. Here is my very basic explanation for each:

  • CPU: The brain of your laptop. A better one makes your laptop faster.
  • RAM: Your laptop’s short term memory – more of this means it can cope well with doing more things at once.
  • Storage: How much space your laptop has to store files, photos, apps etc. More storage means you can store more stuff.
  • Graphics: Your laptop has a graphics processor (GPU) responsible for how things appear on the screen. A better GPU will mean your device will cope better with more complicated graphics, such as in 3D games.
