You asked for a Laptop costing under £1600.

You told me that you needed a high performance laptop for high performance/speed in productivity. You also added the following additional information: Excel, Word. Also Publisher, photoshop. Would be very happy with Macbook but will consider Windows

You indicated a preference for Macbooks, so I’ve given you three options here which I believe give you some different choices at around your budget.

I searched a range of different shops for something that would suit your needs. I have chosen the three options below as the best ones to suit your requirements. However, we all have our own tastes (and of course, prices can change), so I have also included search links for each shop at the bottom of this page in case you’d like to browse further.

I always choose three options. These are usually (1) the best performing option within your budget (i.e. best suited to meet your needs for the longest possible time), (2) the cheapest option that still meets your needs effectively and (3) usually a wildcard option or a compromise between the two. I specify three choices so that you can pick the one that best suits your circumstances.

I do not work for or on behalf of any of the retailers listed below.

1. Best overall performance: EXDISPLAY Apple MacBook Pro M1 Chip 8GB 512GB SSD 13.3″ L…
£1041.99

Key features:
CPU: Apple M1 Chip
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 512GB
This choice represents the best overall performance I could get from your budget. It is an M1 Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. This is an ex-display model, but gives you the Macbook Pro body with 512GB on board storage, which is usually around £1300 brand new. It is the 2020 model, so it features the base M1 processor, which is still very fast. See choice 3 for the cheapest 2021 M1 Pro option.

2. Cheapest option: 2020 Apple MacBook Air Laptop: Apple M1 Chip, 13″ Retin…
£889.00

Key features:
CPU: M1 Chip
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
This choice represents the cheapest device I could find that still meets your needs. I chose it primarily based on its all round performance. This is cheapest M1 Macbook I could find. It is again the 2020 model with the same base M1 chip and 8GB RAM as choice 1, but half as much storage. Storage can be added externally if needed.

3. Third option: 2021 Apple MacBook Pro (14-inch, Apple M1 Pro chip with 8…
£1769.00

Key features:
CPU: M1 Pro chip with 8 core and 14 core GPU
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512GB
This choice represents the third option – the wildcard. This is the cheapest high-end Macbook Pro 2021 featuring the M1 Pro processor, which is faster than the base M1 processor. Equally as important (in my opinion), this features 16GB RAM, which I think is extremely useful for multitasking. It is, however, £170 over your original budget.

Why did I choose these for you?

It is important that you understand what the components of a laptop do so that you can make an informed choice. Here is my very basic explanation for each:

  • CPU: The brain of your laptop. A better one makes your laptop faster.
  • RAM: Your laptop’s short term memory – more of this means it can cope well with doing more things at once.
  • Storage: How much space your laptop has to store files, photos, apps etc. More storage means you can store more stuff.
  • Graphics: Your laptop has a graphics processor (GPU) responsible for how things appear on the screen. A better GPU will mean your device will cope better with more complicated graphics, such as in 3D games.
