Although you asked for a laptop under £200, it is difficult to recommend one at that price – at least, not a brand new one. They tend to be very slow and may well become so slow they are unusable in a relatively short time. As a result, I have found the following laptops that meet your needs.
You told me that you needed a schoolwork laptop for schoolwork purposes. You also added the following additional information: I need this to be as cheap as possible but it must be good enough for my children to get online with their homework.

Your budget is quite modest for a full laptop but I hope to be able to suggest some viable choices for you. I’ll try to explain them each time so that you know why I’ve recommended them and you have a better idea of what to look for if you want to go shopping yourself.
Usually, I would not recommend laptops at this price point – see choice 3 for an alternative. Celeron processors are often slow and 4GB of RAM probably won’t be enough for your computer to run quickly (even less so in the future). I don’t expect choices 1 or 2 to last you more than a couple of years. However, if you keep usage light, the following are a few options at your price point:

If you’re after literally the cheapest laptop I can find for you, this is it. About a 25% reduction in CPU performance over choice 1 and still only 4GB RAM. This is an ex-display model, meaning it is £10 cheaper than the usual price of £149.

I’m giving you a wildcard here. I know it is well over budget, but this is hopefully helpful for comparison. This laptop is by quite a distance the most powerful I could find at this price. It is brand new and the CPU is at least four times as fast as either of the models above. The laptop has 4 times as much storage and 8GB of RAM, which will mean it will be able to cope with much more going on at once than the other two. This is a computer whose specifications tell me it should last you a number of years longer than the other two and is my top recommendation – if you can possibly stretch that far.
Why did I choose these for you?
It is important that you understand what the components of a laptop do so that you can make an informed choice. Here is my very basic explanation for each:
- CPU: The brain of your laptop. A better one makes your laptop faster.
- RAM: Your laptop’s short term memory – more of this means it can cope well with doing more things at once.
- Storage: How much space your laptop has to store files, photos, apps etc. More storage means you can store more stuff.
- Graphics: Your laptop has a graphics processor (GPU) responsible for how things appear on the screen. A better GPU will mean your device will cope better with more complicated graphics, such as in 3D games.
